When the cautious and conservative Meriel-Claire meets her college roommate- the self-confident and capricious Daneen- the two form an improbable friendship. But as Meriel becomes beholden to her shrewd friend, and as Daneen insinuates herself into Meriel’s family, recording their dramas in her notebooks, suspicions and deficits begin to accumulate. Meriel eventually finds her calling as a dept counsellor in the midst of a national financial crisis. Straightening out accounts for strangers, however, proves far easier than reconciling her own complicated relationships.
After years of allegiance, through family tragedy and heartbreak, Meriel will rush to her friend’s rescue- only to face an astonishing realization that will force her to reconsider the high cost of loyalty.
