At 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2009, a Mayday signal was sent from Cougar Helicopters Flight 491 as it was enroute to offshore oil fields on the Grand Bank of Newfoundland.
At 9:55 a.m. word came that the helicopter had crashed into the ocean some ninety kilometres southeast of St. John's.
The hunt for other survivors of Cougar Flight 491 continued in the air and on the water. But as Thursday turned to Friday, hope begins to fade that anyone else would be found alive. The search for survivors was called off at 7 p.m Friday. From then on, the search for the helicopter and its occupants became a recovery operation.
