His life reads as a list of culture war skirmishes: He is one of the only Vietnam War resisters to settle in Newfoundland and Labrador; his advocacy work in the province emboldened a new generation of local activists; as a journalist, he brought unpredictability to a somewhat staid CBC through his production of shows like Oil in the Family and Sunday Morning; and his work as a foreign correspondent landed him in some of the most fraught geopolitical conflicts of the later 20th Century, from China on the eve of the Tiananmen Square massacre, to the Balkan and Gulf wars. But tangled in each of Bill’s professional milestones is a greater search—one for purpose, family, and home.
